INTRODUCTORY NOTE
There are in Bosnia and Herzegovina a number of uncataloged MSS
collections, in private hands, in dervish convents (tekkes), and in
mosques, which have not been surveyed because of difficulties of
access.
The collections which are included in this survey contain more
than 27,000 Islamic MSS. Of these, about 4,000 have been catalogued,
which leaves 23,000 awaiting study and cataloguing.

Page maintainer's note:
This article is reproduced here by kind permission of the Al-Furqan
Islamic Heritage Foundation.
The volunteer who typed it in commented that, as she was keying in the
entries on these many libraries, the realization suddenly hit her
with a physical shock that many, perhaps most of the collections so
painstakingly recorded in this list are now ashes. Of course she had
known about it before, but this brought home the reality in an almost
tangible way. It is indeed difficult to remain unmoved by what was
intended as a bibliographic exercise and has instead become an
elegy.
Despite all the horrors of this war, and the ongoing genocide whose
victims count so many innocent civilians of both sexes and all ages,
it remains at a certain level incomprehensible (and at another
chillingly logical) that the Serbian nationalists have deliberately
targeted and destroyed so much artistic and cultural material. Even
the Nazis, after all, amassed a large collection of Judaica from the
communities they destroyed with the aim of eventually establishing a
"museum of a dead culture." (All that wonderful material, preserved
with morbid fascination by the mass murderers themselves, is now
housed in the Jewish Museum of Prague.) The Serbian nationalists,
however, were not interested in leaving behind any evidence that might
indicate that the lands they have appropriated by brute force were
once the home of a vibrant mosaic of cultures whose peaceful
co-existence and mutual acculturation gives the lie to their most
fundamental principles.
Manuscripts have been reduced to ashes, and buildings to rubble.
It is our duty not to allow the destruction of memory.
